Who’s Your Buddy?

SCUBA diving is a buddy sport. Just having somebody there isn’t enough though. A warm body is not necessarily a buddy.

I found that out the hard way early on in my diving career. I had two great experiences as a new diver that showed me exactly what a buddy should be and shouldn’t be and I’m grateful for both.

These experiences have provided me with clear principles about what it means to be a dive buddy.

SCUBA Scuttled at Colorado State University

The Health and Exercise Sciences department has indefinitely cancelled the SCUBA classes that had been offered through Colorado State University for years according the the Rocky Mountain Collegian newspaper.

SCUBA Schools International Will Join Mares-HEAD!

The SCUBA world was abuzz yesterday as the news came out that SSI was acquired by Mares. ‘Buzz’ really seems like an appropriate description to me as I travel the internet looking at the various social media conversations that have surfaced.

As an SSI dive pro working through an SSI shop that does not currently sell Mares products, I am understandably curious about what this will mean. Not just for me but for the dive community at large. Having said that ‘curious’ doesn’t mean despairing.

My family sold a business to a publicly traded corporation in 2000 so the acquisition of a one enterprise by a significantly larger one is something I have first hand experience with.

Just a head’s up… this is a relatively long post in order to provide some context that is important and relevant.

Why Dive a Computer? – Gas Mixtures!

Dive computers are a great addition to your dive system. When a diver on a limited budget asks me what they should purchase first, a dive computer is always high on the list (usually right below regulators – but every situation warrants some thought). I don’t sell diving computers, I don’t get commission when one a diver buys one but I’m passionate about getting divers into computers.

And here’s why…

Even as recreational divers we have variety of gas mixtures to choose from. This is yet another great reason to dive a computer…
